Time for a new Hot Sauce Review! I always love trying new hot sauces from different countries. I am excited to get to this review on Busha Browne’s Pukka Hot Pepper Sauce. It is a product of Jamaica!
Scotch Bonnet Peppers
The packaging interested me right away. Not only am I sucker for Palm Trees (which is on the label), but it also contains Scotch Bonnet Peppers. I have only had the opportunity to sample very few sauces with Scotch Bonnets.
These peppers are used often in the Caribbean and are a staple in Jamaican cuisine. I have never been to Jamaica, but it is definitely on my bucket list for Spicy Destinations.
In the past, nearly all of the Jamaican, or Jamaican inspired, sauce I have come across were usually some variety of Jerk Sauce. For me, most Jerk Sauces aren’t great. They typically contain very bold, fragrant spices that I don’t really care for very much. I have come across a few I like, but I guess my palate just isn’t sophisticated enough for some of those flavors yet.
After reading the ingredients in this hot sauce, I was really jazzed…it contains:
Water, Scotch Bonnet Peppers, Cane Vinegar, Modified Food Starch, Salt, Approved Spices, (0.1%) Grapefruit Seed Extract (as Preservative)
This is a pretty great ingredient list! For the most part it is Scotch Bonnets, which should really let them shine, and give me a really good grasp on how they taste in a hot sauce.
Fresh and Light
When I first tried this hot sauce, the thing that really struck me is how fresh and light it is. I have often read that Scotch Bonnets have a naturally fragrant flavor to them. They are also consistently listed as some of the hottest peppers in the world.
Although I do not find this hot sauce to be very spicy, it does have a really nice fresh and slightly fruity flavor. I am not a big fan of “fruity” in general, but it is so subtle in this sauce that I like it.
What it goes good on
I have found that the Busha Browe’s Pukka Sauce goes much better on steak than on chicken. This is actually a rarity, and is very exciting to me. It has long been my goal, and much of the reason I started this website, to find hot sauces that are good on steak.
Many, many hot sauces have a tang to them that just doesn’t really lend itself well to steak. But something about this sauce sure does. It is even listed on the label that “This sauce gives that extra spicy fillip to steak…”. And they are right.
The spice level is really not what I would have expected from a Scotch Bonnet Sauce. It gives your tongue the slightest little twinge, but nothing to write home about.
Busha Brown’s Pukka Hot Pepper Sauce Ratings:
Heat Rating: ✮✮✮✮✮✮✮✮✮✮
I would really love to give this a higher rating. The problem is it really could use a little more heat. And although I love that it goes well with steak, the sauce by itself, doesn’t really have much flavor. I originally gave it an Overall Rating of 6 stars, but I moved it up to 7 stars, due to the fact that it really is so hard to find a good hot sauce to put on steak.
All in all, I am super glad I bought and tried this hot sauce. When I finish the bottle I will probably buy more, just for steak. It is honestly the first sauce I found that really went well with steak in a very long time. I guess that the gentle flavor is what makes it so perfect.
Although it isn’t very spicy, as with any hot sauce, if you eat enough of it it does the job. Just put a dousing on several bites in a row and you get the tingle us chiliheads crave! I put some links on here to where you can buy it online, so you can try it for yourself.
I checked out Busha Browne’s website, and they offer quite a few different products. Now that I have been introduced to them, I am excited to try some of their other flavor options. I will definitely keep you posted as I give them a try!
