Hot Mama Salsa, La Femme Fatali- Hot Sauce Review

Hot Mama Salsa La Femme FataliI bought a few new hot sauces this past weekend. Which is always super exciting! I always have such high hopes when I try something new. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn’t. Either way, I am here to share with you my opinion on each new taste bud adventure. With that said, here is my latest Hot Sauce Review on a hot sauce called Hot Mama Salsa- la Femme Fatali.

This “Hot Mama Salsa” brand is actually made locally, here in Oregon. They offer 4 different Hot Sauce varieties, and they also make Salsas and Chili Oils. Since this was my first encounter with their brand, I decided to go for the gusto and get their Spiciest offering…which they called “White Hot”.

Fatalii Chili Pepper!

I was really jazzed to try this hot sauce, because it is made with the Fatalii pepper (the correct spelling has two i’s, but it is spelled with one on the bottle). It is a chili pepper that comes out of central Africa that I have never tried before (to my knowledge). On the hot sauce label it says that the pepper has a “sweet and fruity flavor with a skunky edge”.

This description was a little off-putting to me, but I still wanted to give it a try. Often times I am not too thrilled by “fruity” flavors…especially in my hot sauces. Also, the idea of “skunky” sounded a little nasty, but as I said, I still wanted to try it.

I feel kind of bad when I criticize a hot sauce, especially when it is local, but I am here to give my opinion, so that is what I must do…

Their other sauces and oils might be great, but this one definitely was not…sorry Hot Mama. In all fairness, even though I was excited to try the Fatalii, I had a sneaking suspicion I was not going to like this hot sauce. Besides the Fatalii pepper itself, the other ingredients include pineapple and sweet potatoes. History has shown that I usually do not care for pineapple randomly added to foods and sauces.

Pineapple Funk Phenomenon

The strange thing is that I love pineapple! But other than in a Pina Colada, I do not care for pineapple flavor added to things. I don’t mind the occasional Canadian bacon and pineapple slice of pizza, or few chunks in my cottage cheese, but that is actual pieces of the fruit…not just the flavor mixed into something.

Mixing pineapple flavor, or juice, into something seems to add a very bazaar funk that I have trouble believing anyone could like. I know it is in some teriyaki sauces that may be ok, but I have had some pretty terrible versions of teriyaki in my life.Pineapple

Quite a few years back I went to a nice steak house in my area, and decided to treat myself to a Porterhouse. I had had steaks there several times before, and they were always delicious. This time however, I took my first bite and immediately spit it out thinking the meat had gone bad.

I called the waiter over and reported to him that something was wrong with the steak. He went to the chef with it and came back to tell me the cook was trying out a new pineapple marinade…I couldn’t believe that they had ruined this delicious cut of meat with some experimental marinade! And on top of that, didn’t even warn me or ask if I was ok with being their guinea pig. Needless to say, I asked for a new steak.

That was my first weirdo pineapple flavor experience, and since then I still seem to have the same reaction whenever I encounter this pineapple funk phenomenon.

It’s Not Just Me

To be fair I also had my girlfriend taste this hot sauce, and she had the same reaction that I did…not good. Like, “Get something else in my mouth that tastes good as quickly as possible to erase this horror I am living through!” reaction. Again, sorry Hot Mama…

It doesn’t mean that there isn’t that special group out there that would love this hot sauce. It does have a very unique flavor, and if you like that flavor, you would probably want to drink this stuff up.

Heat Level

My first tasting of La Femme Fatalii was about a week or so ago. I do not recall being impressed by the heat level. However, the bottle says this spicy sauce will leave a burn that lasts up to 10 minutes. As much as I hate to go in for another attack of this stuff on my taste buds, I feel it is only right that I do so to pay more attention to the spiciness.

I know I can’t remember the heat, because the flavor was so shocking. So, I will try to be a good scientist and be indifferent to the taste to just focus on the heat…I am doing this for all of you. I hope you appreciate it. I will be back in a couple minutes with my findings…

5 Minutes LaterLa Femme Fatali Taste Test

Well, to be truthful, it has actually been like 25 minutes. I had to build up the courage to taste this sauce one more time. I distracted myself a little first, then went for it! I put a good dose of the sauce on a tortilla chip, took a couple pictures, and then quickly put the whole thing in my mouth before I chickened out. It is a yellow colored sauce, so it is kind of hard to see on the chip in the picture, but I assure you, I put quite a bit on there to really test the flavor and heat.

This La Femme Fatali does actually have a pretty good kick to it after all. It has now been 6 minutes since I took the bite, and I can still feel some burn where the sauce touched the inside of my mouth and tongue. It is a really nice lingering heat. Not overwhelming, but unmistakably there.

The flavor was as bad as I remembered, but the heat test was worthy of going back to recheck. That gave Hot Mama some redemption on this hot sauce.

(14 minutes after bite- can still feel slight tingle, but it is almost gone)

Hot Mama Salsa, La Femme Fatali- Final Thoughts

Obviously, I did not care for this particular hot sauce, but that doesn’t mean Hot Mama doesn’t make some other great stuff. Whether I liked this sauce or not, I do have to say that it was definitely unique and had some good heat. Those are really important qualities. Sometimes different hot sauces taste the same as others I have tried before, but not this one. And many claim to be spicy, but are not. Also, you can tell they used actual peppers in this sauce to create heat. They didn’t cop out and use bitter pepper extract…another big plus for Hot Mama!La Femme Fatali Hot Sauce

The uniqueness makes me eager to try some of their other products. Even if I only truly end up loving one of them, it would be worth the journey to be able to add a new awesome hot sauce to my list of favorites. Making a good hot sauce is hard to do, and they are tough to find. That is the whole reason I put together this website to begin with.

Here is a link to Hot Mama’s website, in case you are interested in checking out Hot Mama for yourself. I still plan on trying some of their other offerings. Feel free to check it out. If you would like to see some other hot sauces that I can personally recommend, check out My Hot Sauce Shop.
