Time for a Hot Sauce Review! Dave’s Hot Sauces have been around for quite a while now, but it’s time I do an official review on a few of their flavor options. Today I will share my thoughts on Dave’s Ultimate Insanity, Dave’s Hurtin’ Habanero, and Dave’s Ginger Peach.
The only Dave’s Hot Sauce I currently have in my refrigerator is Dave’s Temporary Insanity. But, I went to my local hot sauce stocking restaurant a couple days ago and did a taste test with these three other flavors. It is so cool to have this cafe here. They have a rotating stock of probably at 50 different hot sauces. It makes it really easy for me to sample different kinds for you and I to make an educated decision on which to buy for ourselves.
For this taste test I ordered a french dip. This sandwich is a really great level specimen for testing different hot sauces. It doesn’t have any overwhelming flavors, so it allows me to get a good grasp of what each sauce has to offer.
Dave’s Ginger Peach Hot Sauce
The first sauce I tried with my french dip was the Ginger Peach. Honestly, I try to be open minded, but I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to like this sauce. I was right. It was disgusting. Also, it shouldn’t be called “hot sauce”.
It had no spice at all. The little thermometer they put on the side of the bottle didn’t claim it was very hot, but still…zero heat. My girlfriend said she thought it might be OK on chicken wings. I am positive I wouldn’t like it on anything. However, if you are really wanting to give it a go, chicken wings might be a way to try it, if you must.
Personally, I couldn’t get the flavor of this stuff out of my mouth fast enough!
Dave’s Hurtin’ Habanero
At this point, I am starting to wonder why Dave’s has been around so long. I remember, back in the day, Dave’s was like the hottest thing around. It was a bit of a novelty item, if you wanted something really, really hot. Nowadays, though, there are so many hot sauces to choose from, you don’t need to subject yourself to the nasty flavor of Dave’s hot sauces at all.
Anyways…Hurtin’ Habanero. I have eaten a lot of Habaneros in my life. They are hot. Sure, they aren’t the hottest pepper around, but still pretty darn hot nonetheless. This “hot” sauce is not hot. I don’t even know how it can contain any habanero at all. And, of course, it has that terrible, bitter pepper extract flavor that is apparently Dave’s trademark.
Dave’s Ultimate Insanity
Well, at least this one has a little kick to it. That kick is not enough to overpower the wretched taste though. I don’t know if it was just a coincidence, but moments after trying to spit and sputter that horrible crud out of my mouth I started feeling very unwell. Could have been the pot of coffee I drank before lunch, but who knows. Nevertheless, I had to take a break and let it work its way down a little before I could do anything else. It wasn’t the heat, because that faded very quickly…it was just the terrible, terrible flavor.
Hot Sauce Review in Review
I think it probably goes without saying here…I do not recommend any of these Hot Sauces. As I mentioned earlier, I own Dave’s Temporary Insanity. This is the only one I can vouch for at all. It, as well, doesn’t have a great flavor. It does seem to be a bit less bitter than some of the others though, and it packs some good heat. I generally use it as an additive to other sauces.
For example, I will put a couple drops into some A-1 sauce for a spicier steak sauce. Also, if you rub a few drops on meat before you cook it, most of the flavor gets cooked away or buried by the other seasonings, but it leaves some heat behind.
Here is a look at how Dave’s rates the heat level of their sauces:
Well, I think that about wraps it up for today’s insight into Dave’s hot sauces. I hope this article was helpful. Above all, I hope it saves you from having to taste these stomach churning sauces for yourself. If you are interested in seeing some hot sauces I do recommend, most of what I currently own (plus a few others) can be found on my Hot Sauce Shop page.
