Hello all you hot sauce lovers! I recently added three “new to me” hot sauces to my collection. I thought this would be a great time to add some hot sauce reviews to the list.
In a recent trip to our local dollar store I noticed they had a couple hot sauces available that I wasn’t sure if I had ever actually tried. I know they are pretty common brands, but if I have ever tried them before I don’t remember if I liked them.
So, I thought, what the heck, you just can’t beat $1 for a bottle of hot sauce. With that said, I went ahead and purchased a bottle of Texas Pete Original Hot Sauce and a bottle of Louisiana The Perfect Hot Sauce (that’s what it says on the label).
The third hot sauce I will be discussing today is El Yucateco Black Label Reserve. I was very excited to buy this hot sauce. I love the Green and Red El Yucateco Habanero Hot Sauces, so had very high hopes for the Black Label.
Texas Pete Original Hot Sauce
Overall Rating: F
This hot sauce has actually been around since 1929. That is impressive. The company that makes Texas Pete is called the T.W. Garner Food Company.
The first sauce this family actually sold was a BBQ Sauce. Crazily, this decades old sauce company got it beginnings with a BBQ Sauce Recipe that Thad Garner was handed as part of a BBQ restaurant that he bought. The restaurant failed, so they just kept selling the BBQ sauce.
Soon after they came up with their Texas Pete Original Hot Sauce that they are know for today.
The Texas Pete brand also has 10 other flavors of sauces besides the original. I actually did not realize that they had so many varieties before looking into it.
There is even a Texas Pete Cocktail Sauce and a Texas Pete Sriracha Sauce. I am looking forward to trying their “Sabor” sauce, which is a Mexican style hot sauce.
So, although I look forward to trying some of there other sauces, I have to say I was not impressed with the Texas Pete Original.
I am sure there are some of you out there who love this sauce, but I have say, there was a reason this stuff was being sold at the dollar store.
This sauce has some kind of funk going on that just is not right. Both of us tried it here at home. We even tried it twice, because we thought we must have been imagining how horrible it was.
But, that was not the case. Ended up just taking it to work and sitting it on the break room table in case somebody else might like it. That was about three or four weeks ago now, and it is still just sitting there with maybe 10 drops missing.
Needless to say, I do not recommended Texas Pete Original Hot Sauce. It is still very possible that some of their newer sauces might be better. I would be happy to give their other flavors a try.
I actually hope to do that soon, so that I can do a follow up to this review. Hopefully with something positive to say about this nearly 90 year old company.
The next time I see Texas Pete sitting on a table at a restaurant I will make sure to give it another try too. I guess it is minutely possible that we just got a bad batch, or both of us had taste bud issues that day.
That is highly unlikely, but it is hard to believe that something that tasted that bad could still be around after 90 years. So, I will surely try it again sometime soon.
Louisiana The Perfect Hot Sauce
Overall Rating: C
Oddly this hot sauce came about in 1928…one year before Texas Pete. Also, the Texas Pete brand and the Louisiana Brand Hot Sauce seem to have very similar flavor options.
Both brands even have tiny tabasco peppers in a jar soaked in vinegar. To me, this cannot be a coincidence, but I have been unable to find a direct correlation between the two companies.
Due to these two being started up within a year of each other and the extremely similar product varieties, I honestly expected to find a lot of information about a long running rivalry between the two hot sauce companies. However, this is not the case. It must just be a silent feud.
With all of that said, I can happily say that the Louisiana Hot Sauce is incomparably better than the Texas Pete’s. Namely because it is edible.
The Louisiana Hot Sauce actually has a somewhat similar flavor profile to Frank’s Red Hot Original. This type of sauce goes really well with chicken, especially hot wings.
This hot sauce only has three ingredients listed on the label- Peppers, Vinegar, and Salt. It does have a vinegary taste, but it is also has a nice pepper flavor.
It is really quite yummy and has a little bit of heat. It would go quite nicely on scrambled eggs or on a taco. A breakfast burrito seems like a perfect conduit for this sauce.
It also has a flavor that would go perfectly in a Bloody Mary. I think I will give that a try this weekend!
All in all, this is a really good sauce that I lucked out finding at the dollar store. I would definitely pay more than that for it. I have paid way more for Frank’s Red Hot and I think the Louisiana Hot Sauce would make just as great of a hot wing sauce.
El Yucateco Black Label Reserve
Overall Rating: B-
As I mentioned earlier, I have been really pleased with all the El Yucateco sauces I have tried in the past.
The first time I tasted them was at a little local Mexican restaurant here in town. I loved them so much I asked the owner if I could buy a couple bottles from her. She gladly sold them too me, and I have been hooked ever since.
One thing I would like to say about their sauces is that each one has a very distinctive flavor. Because of this each one is not something I would eat on a lot of different kinds of foods, but when you find something you like one on you won’t want to take a bite without it ever again.
The Black Label Reserve is no different. It has a totally new and distinct flavor completely different from its family of El Yucateco sauces.
Often times I am not a big fan of really, really dark hot sauces. for some reason they tend to have a kind of bitter and unpleasant flavor. So, when I saw this sauce I had my reservations, but couldn’t wait to try it because of how much I love the Red and Green varieties.
The first taste I took of the Black Label was inconclusive. It was so different from other sauces I almost didn’t know what to make of it.
That night I had grilled some steaks and thought the smokiness of this sauce would go great with them. So, I tried a second taste on a bite of steak. And then a third, and then a fourth…addicted!
I have only had this bottle a couple weeks and it is already half empty. That is pretty amazing for me, because I have so many hot sauce choices it usually takes me a little while to go through a bottle of a particular kind.
It is just really good, and spicy, smokey and different than other sauces I have tried. I usually do not like smokey flavored food items, but for some reason this one is different.
I highly recommend giving it a try, especially on steak or even a hamburger. It will give it a great flavor and a nice spicy bite.
I made sure to put this must have condiment in My Hot Sauce Shop, so you all can try some for yourself too.
I hope you enjoyed my Hot Sauce Reviews and breakdown of these three sauces. If you have any question, comments, suggestions, or stories you would like to share please feel free to leave a comment below.
