I am excited to say that I now have a long awaited, badly needed, new set of knives! With great enthusiasm I will now share my little story of how I got them, and present my Pioneer Woman Knife Set Review to all of you!
With as much as I love to cook and eat you would think I would already have an awesome set of kitchen knives. However, that has not been the case. I have been using a set of mismatched hand me downs for years. Even though I was constantly frustrated with my inability to cut meat and veggies with ease, I never wanted to spend the money to upgrade. And I was so used to it, it really didn’t occur to me how much it would change my life to actually be able to slice and dice like a chef.
Recently, however, my brother in law, after visiting for Thanksgiving took it upon himself to resolve our issue. He comes over for holidays throughout the year, and house sits for us when we are out of town. Apparently, watching us struggle with our cutlery was so obvious that he had to fix it for us.
So, for Christmas a couple months ago, he got us something we desperately needed…a new set of knives. I was so happy when I unwrapped that gift! I immediately started thinking of all the things that would become easier, and in some cases just plain possible, with some good sharp knives.
My bro-in-law said he was tired of listening to us fight over the one decent steak knife when preparing meals. And, yes, that was “steak knife”. We were doing all of our prep work with a steak knife because it was the sharpest knife in our arsenal. We have even bought two or three sharpeners over the years, but they never seemed to do anything.
But, now, none of that matters…yay!! With all of that said, I wanted to take some time to break down the Pioneer Woman Knife Set he bought us in case any of you were looking for an affordable new set of knives for yourself or someone else.
The Pioneer Woman Knife Set
This set comes in 5 colors: Black, Brown, White, Red, and Turquoise. I am showing the Turquoise here because that is the color we have, but you can choose whichever color you prefer. I think my bro-in-law may have picked the turquoise color for us because it matches a set of silverware we have that my grandma bought us. It was really very observant of him if that is truly why he picked that color…but I kind of suspect that was the only color they had when he bought them. Either way, the color is very nice, and it does match the silverware quite nicely.
Having five color options is really cool though. There is pretty much a color to match, or at least compliment, almost any kitchen. When you click on the photo above it takes to the amazon page with all the color choices so you can see them all.
14 Piece Set
It is labeled as a 14 piece set, but it is really a 13 piece set with a butcher block holder for the set. It includes:
- 6 Steak Knives
- 1 Bread Knife
- 1 Paring Knife
- 1 Pair of Kitchen Shears
- 1 Signature Knife (my favorite)
- 1 Sharpening Rod
- 1 Utility Knife
- 1 Chef’s Knife
The Signature Knife
This knife may have an actual name in the world of cutlery, but the packaging calls it her (Ree- The Pioneer Woman) Signature Knife. Honestly, when I first saw it I thought it looked stupid. I couldn’t imagine what the heck a square fronted knife would be good for. I soon found out though, that it is great for slicing meat…namely, Carne Asada. Which is a dream come true for me. (This is the knife pictured to the side of the block in the image above)
I have been bickering with the butcher at my local meat shop for years, trying to get them to consistently slice my Carne Asada correctly. But now, I can do it myself! I cannot tell you how joyful I am about this. Even if this was the only knife I got for Christmas, I would be ecstatic.
The Kitchen Shears
My second favorite tool in this set are the kitchen shears. I have been primarily using them as poultry shears. Prior to getting these lovely shears, attempting to make my own buffalo wings was pure torture. Literally hours of misery and hand cramps trying to cut the wings in two. Now it’s a breeze…awesome! I love me some hot wings.
A couple weeks ago we cut up some wings and made ourselves four different flavor varieties. It was super fun and delicious. We will have to do it again soon, so I can write an article about them.
I just want to mention that you can also use the poultry shears as scissors at the base of the blades, just in case you needed scissors for something. I just haven’t really found much need for that so far, since I have other scissors.
The Rest of the Set
The steak knives and bread knife work great for their intended purposes. It is a whole new world for me to not use steak knives for everything, so it is very impressive to have different knives that do different things. I love it! I have used the Chef’s Knife and Utility Knife for cutting fruit and vegetables and they work great too. I haven’t had any need to use the sharpening steel rod for anything yet, but I am sure it also works perfectly.
The whole set is really fantastic, and I couldn’t be happier!
The instructions say to hand wash only. There is no way I can stick to that. To be honest, my family actually bought me some knives the Christmas before this last one. It was a set of 6 knives that come individually placed in sharpening sleeves.
They work just fine for small stuff, but there were a couple issues with them. First of all, because they get sharpened every time you take them out, they always have little shards of metal curled up on the blade that you have to wash off before every use. Secondly, they are also hand wash only. The first time I wasn’t paying attention and put them in the dishwasher they started to rust. Not really convenient for me. But, happily, I found that they are awesome knives for camping. The covers they live in make them safe for packing in our camping gear without sharps end poking out, and we hand wash everything when camping anyway. So, now we always have safe, sharp camping knives for meat and veggies on the go. It’s really great!
Back to washing the Pioneer Woman Knives…we have been consistently washing them in the dishwasher for about 2 months now and haven’t encountered any rust. This is a big plus, and really important to me. I have been sure to not let them sit in water for an extended time before washing, and I try to dry them after the dishwasher is done. But that is easy and totally worth paying attention to in order to have sharp, wonderful knives.
The Pioneer Woman Knife Set- In Review
I would totally recommend these knives. They are super affordable, nice looking, and very functional. I really have nothing negative to say about this knife set at all. You can click on the image link here to see current pricing and color options on amazon.
Farberware Knife Set with Edgekeeper Sleeves
In case you like to go camping, like me, I will also put the link for the Farberware EdgeKeeper Knives I was talking about above. I looked them up on amazon, and I found they offer: individual knives, a 2 knife set, and the 3 knife set. I must have gotten two of the 3 piece sets.
They really are great for camping. I have had tons of problems in the past with knives poking out of packaging and stabbing me when reaching for different items in my camping gear. I have tried all kinds of solutions, like putting them in a Tupperware type container (bulky and a waste of space), double/triple wrapping the sharp edges and tips with paper towels, actual towels, etc. Nothing has worked anywhere near as good as these knives for safety and sharpness. And they are really inexpensive. You should check them out!
I truly hope this review has been helpful and informative. If you have any other questions, comments, or suggestions feel free to let me know. You can leave a comment below, I would love to hear from you! Thanks for visiting. I look forward to talking to you again soon! Happy Chopping!
